Art Therapy in Action

Johannesburg, Pretoria, Winterveldt, and Bokamoso in South Africa

Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru in  Kenya and Bagamoyo in Tanzania, Kyiv and Lviv in Ukraine, Bukavu in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

In summer of 2017 Tally accompanied Rachel Cohen, founder of Common Threads Project, to facilitate art based trauma trainings in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In summer 2017 Tally conducted 6 days of Art Therapy and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy workshops in Kyiv and Lviv in Ukraine. Tally worked with a former student and Fullbright scholar, Iryna Natalushko.

In winters of 2016 - 2019 Tally spent several weeks in East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania) as a member and group leader of the Global Alliance for Africa Therapeutic Arts Program.  Each year GAA takes 10-15 professionals in counseling and the creative arts to work with our partners in East Africa with a train the trainer model. Tally has been instrumental in working with a trauma-informed art therapy focus to assist with this mission.

Summer of 2019 was our 4th  GW Student trip to South Africa (previous trips 2011, 2014, 2016). Tally has also traveled there on her own and has made connections with several universities and psychologists, arts therapists and artists in country. This year, with the support of dance therapist Jody Wager, Tally brought graduate students from the GW Art Therapy program through Johannesburg, Pretoria and Winterveldt South Africa. They engaged with local art therapy organizations, worked with youth at Bokamoso Youth Centre, and spent time in the cities and townships gaining an understanding of the South African culture and complexities.  Youth from Bokamoso visit us at GW in the winter months in our exchange program.

Tally has been involved in service trips to Kenya and Tanzania through the Global Alliance for Africa (GAA). This trip brings professionals from Art, Dance, Drama and other therapies from the US and around the world to meet and share skills with therapeutic artists in Kenya and Tanzania.

Umoja = Unity

Tally led trips with George Washington University students to South Africa in the Summer of 2014 and 2016. We worked with families and staff at the NGO Art Therapy Centre Lafika LaPhodiso in Johannesburg as well as teaching a class at University of Johannesburg. We continued our work at Bokamoso in the township of Winterveldt and conducted several community workshops using textiles, beads, masks and open art studio approaches.

South Africa, Summer 2015

In 2015 Tally and Becky returned to South Africa to further our connections with people in and around Johannesburg, Pretoria and Winterveldt. We conducted art therapy and trauma training workshops, met with counselors and community leaders, engaged with university and hospital staff, and got to know the local art scene.

In support of this activity we hosted Lorette Dye and her fiancé Louis for the 4th of July weekend and to screen the new film documentary being created by Derek Fowler Productions.

Art Therapy Experiences South Africa, Summer 2014

Teaching "International, Social and Cultural Diversity" in South Africa this past summer gave me the opportunity to  explore a spectacular and fascinating country. One of the highlights was working with youth and staff at the Bokomoso Center in Winterveldt near Pretoria South Africa.
