I have conducted international programs in South Africa (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Winterveldt, and Bokamoso), Kenya (Nairobi, Naivasha, and Nakuru), Tanzania (Bagamoyo), Ukraine (Kyiv and Lviv), Democratic Republic of Congo (Bukavu), Croatia (Osijek), Nigeria (Ajuba - ), and Kathmandu, Nepal. This page highlights some of those international programs.
COMMON THREADS PROJECT
BUKAVU, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO- SEATTLE- NEW YORK- KATHMANDU, NEPAL
In 2017 I worked with Common Threads Project/ Mukwege Foundation in the DRC. I designed and co-facilitated a 10 day training for trainers to use creative processes (art and storycloth) for the mental health support of women affected by gender based violence.
Beginning in 2021 I broadened my role with Common Threads Project to become the Director of Training. In this capacity I have developed and facilitated numerous trainings based on the unique methodologies of Common Threads Project in New York (NY), Seattle (Washington), and Kathmandu, Nepal.

George Washington University
SOUTH AFRICA
As a professor in the Art Therapy Program at the George Washington University, I brought students to South Africa where I led a service learning study abroad course (summers 2014-2019). We worked with youth at the Bokamoso Youth Foundation in the township of Winterveldt (near Pretoria) and with the support of colleagues and guides on the ground, we experienced the enriching culture of art, music, dance and studied the history of South Africa.
GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR AFRICA
KENYA & TANZANIA
My work in Kenya and Tanzania has been with the Therapeutic Arts Program of the Global Alliance for Africa. I've been a leader for groups of professionals (counselors, art, dance and drama therapists) from the US and abroad who volunteer to work for several weeks with our partners, the therapeutic artists and counselors in East Africa. Although Covid interfered with recent trips, we anticipate a new group working with us this January 2023.
Croatia
The art therapy project in Croatia was an extension of my teaching at George Washington University. The GW Art Therapy program helped build the first graduate training program of Art Therapy in Croatia. I spent several weeks teaching intensive courses in Osijek (eastern Croatia) and subsequently many months supervising students in the first cohort of program graduates.
NIGERIAN Internationally Displaced PERSONS (IDP) DIASPORA Support Group (NIDSG)
NIGERIA
Nigeria is a recent project where I worked with a colleague to design a training for counselors in Nigeria working with vulnerable populations of children. In 2021 I conducted 4 days training via ZOOM. In 2022 I traveled to Abuja and worked directly with staff and trainees.
UKRAINE
Ukraine Art Therapy Association, NGO in Kyiv
Institute of Mental Health, Ukraine Catholic University, Lviv
During my sabbatical in 2017 I had the good fortune to travel to Ukraine and work with several group teaching art and somatic skills to therapists. My colleague (and former student) Iryna N. assisted me providing translation into Russian and Ukranian through both weeks of training.
